Connor Swift produced a valiant effort in stage five's breakaway at the Tour of Britain, only to be caught just a few hundred metres from the line.

The day was rapid from the off, with Connor, Matthew Holmes (GB), and Rasmus Pedersen (Decathlon AG2R Development Team) putting in a huge effort to get away from the peloton.

Never given more than two minutes, the trio began measuring their efforts in order to have something left for the finale. As the peloton started to wind them in, they would up the pace to avoid capture.

With just five kilometres to go, the gap was hovering around 30 seconds, and it was clear it would be close.

Despite a powerful ride, the trio would be caught just 500 metres from the line. Connor was rewarded for his efforts with the Combativity Prize, with Ethan Hayter sprinting to seventh.
