Laurens de Plus sealed third overall with a superb time trial in the final stage of Volta ao Algarve.

De Plus finished eighth on the uphill TT that  finished atop the famous Alto de Malhão climb, with Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma Lease-a-bike) winning the stage and overall race.

Joao Almedia maintained second overall to complete the podium, with De Plus finishing just nine seconds behind the UAE Team Emirates rider.

De Plus started the final stage third overall, with Almeida and race leader Jan Christen (UAE Team Emirates) ahead of him.

The final climb looked set to decide the time trial and De Plus opted for a bike change at the foot of Malhao to have a lighter bike for the finale.

Vingegaard set an unassailable time to beat, moving from sixth to first overall, with De Plus limiting his losses to the two-time Tour de France winner, which saw him record a time to overhaul previous race leader Christen.

Filippo Ganna finished 14th on the stage, with Thymen Arensman 16th to make it three Grenadiers in the top 20.

Laurens de Plus

"This TT was all about pacing, and I could hear my coach behind me in the car an maybe I got a little bit excited.

"We’ve had a really nice journey together these past four years and maybe I got a bit overenthusiastic hearing his voice. By the end, the last kilometre was the longest of my career!

"It was a good week for our team in Algarve, but the wider team we had collarbone injuries to some key riders.
