Ewan wins stage two of Itzulia Basque Country

Caleb Ewan rocketed to his second win of the season, showing his phenomenal sprint on the second stage of Itzulia Basque Country.

A fantastic lead out from Kim Heiduk and Axel Laurance saw Ewan time his sprint to perfection and fire to first place in Lodosa, while Salvatore Puccio, Victor Langellotti and Omar Fraille worked on the front for the majority of the day in a brilliant team effort.

Michael Leonard remains in the young rider jersey and 10th on the GC. Laurance came home 11th on the 186.6km sprint stage.

Caleb Ewan:

“The team rode really great. We controlled the stage from the start and they were able to set me up well for the sprint.

“We knew we had to be at the front in the final. I was in fourth position in the last kilometre and in third position before the last corner. That was perfect. I was able to do my sprint. 

“With wind, this would have been a very difficult stage. There were many open sections, but fortunately no echelons. The harder the stage, the harder it is for me. I am glad that today was quite straightforward.”
