Filippo Ganna secured second place overall at Tirreno-Adriatico in one of the finest performances of his career to date.
After a week of solid racing, a true team effort on the final day helped Ganna capture crucial bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint, and elevate himself one spot on the final podium.
The Grenadiers spent over a hundred kilometres setting a searing tempo on the front to both overhaul and fend off breakaway attempts, paving the way for Ganna to unleash a powerful sprint on the way to three pivotal seconds.
A safe passage into the finale ensured that Ganna completed the task, with Jonathan Milan (Lidl-Trek) claiming the final stage victory in San Benedetto del Tronto.
The end result saw Ganna finish 35 seconds back on victor Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates – XRG) and marked his best GC showing to date. Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain - Victorious) who began the day one second ahead of Ganna, rounded out the podium places.
Earlier, Lucas Hamilton did a great job covering off the day’s initial breakaway, which also included Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin – Deceuninck). That group was quickly reeled in due to the powerful riding of the Grenadiers, with Laurens De Plus putting in a stinging turn on the day’s only major climb.
