Filippo Ganna kicked the Tour of Austria off with second place in a tight and technical prologue around the streets of St Polten. The three kilometre course contained virtually no elevation change and would be undertaken on road bikes.

Impressive rides came from Brandon Rivera (9th), Kim Heiduk (8th) and Magnus Sheffield (6th), all just seconds away from the victory.

It was however Ganna who would be the fastest of the Grenadiers. The recently-crowned five-time National Champion powered round the course to finish just one second behind the win.

The race continues tomorrow with a lumpy 178 kilometre circuit to and from Bad Tatzmannsdorf.
