After two sprint stages, the Tour Down Under GC action kicked off in earnest on stage three. The short, 148 kilometre stage from Norwood to Uraidla included two ascents of the Pound Reserve climb, the final of which would prove key in splitting the bunch.
Magnus Sheffield was instrumental in driving the pace up the climb, before doing much of the work in the pursuit of lone leader Javier Romo (Movistar).
Once it became clear Romo would not be caught, Sheffield prepared for the sprint, in which would come tenth.
