Axel Laurance fired to fourth place on the second stage of Volta a Catalunya in a hotly contested sprint finish.

The team rode really well through the day to maintain a good position and set up the Frenchman in the final sprint.

With 180.5-kilometres from Banyoles to Figueres to cover, the peloton let an early break of three escape, before being reeled in up the first categorised climb of the day.

The descent towards the finish in Figueres saw the Grenadiers hit the front, with Geraint Thomas descending with phenomenal speed and skill to set the pace for the peloton.

A tailwind saw the peloton’s speed increase to more than 60kph, before Thomas got back to the front to charge into the final few kilometres.

The Welshman was the perfect lead out man for Laurance who launched his attack just slightly too early, pipped to the line in a bunch finish, with Ethan Vernon (Israel - Premier Tech) snatching the victory.

A strong day out for the squad saw Laurens De Plus and Egan Bernal roll in with the peloton, with the Belgian rider sitting 12th on the GC.

Reaction

Axel Laurance: “There was a lot of movement out there. It was a wide road and you had to stay calm as long as possible. With so many riders it was difficult to move up. I felt like it went pretty okay, I was placed well. I saw that they were moving on the left and I tried to follow them. We just got baulked a little bit. I became a little bit too exposed and the corner was just too close to the finish line. It was a bit too difficult to move up after that. I think I could have done better but it was a good day.

“I think we’re riding well as a team so I’m hoping we can do something in the next few days.”
