One Day Race » Maastricht › Berg en Terblijt 253.6km
Tom Pidcock took a stellar maiden victory in the Amstel Gold Race by out sprinting a trio of elite riders to take the win in Berg en Terblijt.
The team worked flawlessly throughout the day, bossing the front first with Cam Wurf, then Brandon Rivera, and Connor Swift in the early stages, before Omar Fraile took to the front as TV cameras turned on.
Ben Turner put in some huge digs on the myriad of climbs that litter the undulating roads in the most southern extremities of the Netherlands, before Michal Kwiatkowski upped the pace into the foot of the Gulperberg with 45km remaining.
Kwiato would do much of the work in the following kilometres, as the peloton rapidly thinned out and key riders started making their moves. A split of about 10 went clear inside 30 kilometres to go and Tom cannily hopped across with Tiesj Benoot (Visma - Lease a Bike), where the group quickly gathered more than 30 seconds on a much-reduced bunch.
Attacks were near constant from there until the finish, with Tom to the fore all the way. In the dying kilometres a strong quartet, including the Yorkshireman, went clear and held a convincing lead under the flame rouge.
Into the sprint, and Pidcock jumped at the perfect moment, powering to the line to take a first victory in the Amstel Gold Race.
